Lower Mercury Emissions Drastically with the Nalco Mobotec System
Mercury, a well-known toxin, is a naturally occurring element in coal. During coal combustion, mercury is released into the atmosphere and is eventually deposited into water and onto land. Once mercury enters the water, small microorganisms change the substance into methylmercury, a highly toxic form of mercury that can easily enter the food chain. Consumption of fish and shellfish with high levels of methylmercury can harm the human brain, heart, kidneys and other organs. Mercury emissions can be carried large distances downwind and can affect the health of individuals in many areas of the world. Recent state and federal regulations mandate significant reduction of mercury emissions.
The Nalco Mobotec suite of patented mercury reduction technologies significantly reduces emissions released into the atmosphere, resulting in cleaner air and water. The focus of Nalco Mobotec's mercury control technologies is to maximize mercury removal by increasing the co-benefit from existing capital equipment via application of targeted technologies. These simple, practical solutions not only reduce mercury emissions on coal-fired boilers, they cost substantially less than comparable mercury emissions control technologies such as activated carbon injection.
Our MerControl® family of solutions include mercury oxidation additives (MerControl 7895), mercury re-emission suppressants (MerControl 8034), and additional chemistries to reduce mercury concentrations in wastewater (Nalmet 1689). Some additional advantages to Nalco's MerControl technologies:
- Application of MerControl 7895 can reduce or eliminate the need for activated carbon injection, reducing compliance costs and maintaining fly ash quality for concrete manufacture.
- For units with a w-FGD, MerControl 7895 and/or MerControl 8034 can eliminate the need for activated carbon injection completely. By maximizing mercury oxidation rates and w-FGD mercury removal efficiencies, typical mercury emission regulations can be achieved without the use of activated carbon, reducing required capital and annual O&M related to mercury control.
- Both MerControl 7895 and MerControl 8034 are liquid applications, providing ease of use and reduced required capital.
Nalco Mobotec experts will work with your technical and management staff to provide the most cost-effective solution for mercury emissions control to meet the requirements of various air quality regulations.
