NOx Control

Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) are released into the atmosphere by fossil fuel combustion and carried downwind, where they contribute to the formation of acid rain. Near large cities, in particular, nitrogen oxides react with atmospheric organic compounds to produce ground-level ozone, a pollutant especially harmful to those with respiratory problems.

New and existing national, state, and local regulations mandate stringent limits on the release of NOx emissions in order to protect the health of the public and promote compliance with national ambient air quality standards. Nalco Mobotec’s patented technologies achieve significant NOx reductions—improving local air quality and reducing long distance transport of air pollutants.

To Reduce NOx Emissions, Nalco Mobotec Developed the ROFA® and ROTAMIX® Systems

ROFA System
Nalco Mobotec provides simple, practical, and highly cost-effective solutions for NOx reductions, compared to other technologies such as selective catalytic reduction (SCR).Our patented Rotating Opposed Fired Air (ROFA®) System sets the volume of gases within the furnace into rotation via an asymmetric boosted over-fire air system. This induced rotation and turbulence prevent laminar flow, resulting in superior mixing and temperature distribution for more effective combustion.

Superior mixing of overfire air through ROFA technology enables more effective combustion staging. This allows for optimal emissions control, reducing the production of NOx emissions. The Computational Fluid Dynamics model underneath illustrates how installing ROFA technology reduces NOx emissions. ROFA technology has consistently reduced NOx emissions by over 50 percent on many different types of boilers burning a wide variety of fuels.

In addition to significant NOx reductions, the ROFA System reduces the formation of CO and particulate matter, while minimizing excess air and unburned carbon in the fly ash.

ROFA technology also allows for the flexibility to fire various types of fuels or to cofire biomass.

ROFA technology can be used on various types of systems

ROTAMIX System
The above diagram shows a typical ROTAMIX System incorporated with our patented ROFA technology.Nalco Mobotec’s ROTAMIX System is an advanced, selective, non-catalytic reduction (SNCR) technology in which a reducing chemical such as urea or ammonia is injected into the boiler to further lower NOx emissions. The urea or ammonia molecules then react with NOx molecules to produce elemental nitrogen and water.

Nalco Mobotec’s third generation advanced design requires less NOx reduction chemicals, benefiting customers directly by reducing reagent costs. Combining the Nalco Mobotec ROFA and ROTAMIX® Systems lowers NOx emissions by over 80 percent compared with uncontrolled concentrations—at a significantly lower cost than other NOx reduction technologies.

Nalco Mobotec experts will work with your technical and management staff to provide the most cost-effective solutions for meeting the requirements of air quality rules and regulations.
