Published Paper - CFD Modeling Of An Advanced Overfired Air System
A stoker-fired boiler burning bagasse (sugar cane waste) was analyzed using a CFD model, which incorporated detailed submodels to characterize fuel combustion on the grate, suspension above the grate, and in the gas phase. Model parameters were tuned to match the baseline test data, but were not changed for ROFA design. ROFA is a patented, boosted, over-fired air technology. The simulations showed that combustion of high-moisture bagasse on the grate was improved, as evidenced by significant reduction of CO and unburned fuel, due to strong mixing by ROFA jets. Staging is shown to reduce NOx emissions. Since improved combustion allows the unit to be operated at a reduced air flow rate, furnace efficiency is improved.
